Five Things to Do to Get Rid of Clutter

It’s amazing how much crap can gather in a short amount of time. Whether from laziness, staying in a hurry or forgetting to go back and finish stuff once your are done, clutter gathers at rapid paces.

And it sits and remains. Unused, without purpose, and causing frustration.

So I have 5 little time saving tips that I use to keep crap from building up.

  1. Clean in Passes
This strategy means you travel around around cleaning small amounts at a time. First pass, remove the dirty dishware, then go back and pick up anything that belongs in other rooms, and so on. With each pass, the room should get cleaner and cleaner allowing for make once final pass of looking upon a clean, relaxing room. The important part of this task is not to fixate yourself on any one area of the room, but rather delve deeper into the mess on each pass.
  2. Create an Efficient To-Do List
You’ve seem them, the to-do chore list. It has up-teen million little tasks to do, which you have no urge to do simply because it is so daunting. Instead, reduce the list into a set of lists for no more than 10 items each. Put one in each area you need to clean and dedicate a little but of time to taking care of one each day on the lists. Keep in mind that you should completely finish one item on the list and not check it off until it is done.
  3. Give your crap a second life
A lot of the junk you don’t use or need shouldn’t be just thrown out. Consider giving it away or donating it to give those items a place where they will be useful. For example, old clothing. Donate it. Neighbor doesn’t have a car jack but you have a half dozen of them, give it to them. Giving away and donating stuff can feel gratifying and help affirm friendships. So don’t feel bad. Simple acts of kindness can go a long way.
  4. Question Everything that you get before you get it
Want to undermine any kind of cleaning you do in your house, ignore this tip. I’ve been to stores and seen people buy crap they don’t need for no reason other than the fact that they are there now, with cash in hand, and can get it. Why do you think Wall-to-Wal-Mart exists? To sell you useless junk!
When you go out to get stuff, anything, consider and question its purpose. If you are going for light bulbs, don’t buy yourself a juicer because it’s 5 bucks off when you already own one that works just fine. By cutting off the inflow of junk, you can see results of cleaning sooner rather than scratching your head wondering who many more universal remotes you own.
  5. Dedication starts with a small time commitment
10-15 minutes of cleaning each day can bring out huge change. Hell, I only mow my lawn for about 10-20 minutes. Then I resume the next day. Sure, it takes longer and pisses off my neighbor from hell all to hell, but I can do more in a single day by devoting small blocks of time to several tasks instead of devoting all my time to one task and burning out.

I hope this helps you out as much as it helped me. Enjoy and post any other tips and ideas you might have as we all follow the path to enlightenment.
