Another christmas past, another mess to clean.
Here we go with five more cleaning tips that helps keep my life free of clutter and should help you too.
- MultiTasking While Waiting.
Don’t just sit around waiting for things to finish. You can do things while you wait. Making coffee? rinse a few dishes out. Cooking dinner in the oven? pick up a little bit. Waiting for the laundry? clean the toilet. A few minutes can make a difference so don’t wait for time to come to you to do something, because Time waits for no man. - Conservation of Mass
The law of conservation of mass/matter, also known as law of mass/matter conservation (or the Lomonosov-Lavoisier law), states that the mass of a closed system will remain constant, regardless of the processes acting inside the system. An equivalent statement is that matter cannot be created/destroyed, although it may be rearranged.
What does this mean, it means that you cannot bring more crap into your home without discarding an equal amount of crap. - Reduce your Dedicated Storage Spaces
One way of cutting down on the amount of mess you have is by limiting the amount of space it can use. Don’t use big tubs to store junk in, use small ones. Don’t store as much in your closet, and so on. The more storage space you have, the more likely you are to fill it with junk. - Get rid of old clothing
Because you’re not wearing it. Duh. Anything that is worn out, developing holes, or is in poor shape should be simply discarded. Clothing you can’t fit into, and lets be realistic, should be donated away and not retained. Don’t keep clothing that is too small because you plan, in the span of a year and never of fitting back into. If that’s the reason why, buy yourself a belt that would fit the pants in question and work out until you can fit the belt around your clothing. Don’t keep old clothing. - Boxes Are Your Enemy
When boxes can build up, it’s normally because you are packing junk up and hording it. If you can look at a box and not know what you put into it, it’s time for that box to get cleaned out and eliminated. As I see it, there shouldn’t be more than one box per room of stored crap plus one or two boxes for each holiday you celebrate. So let’s be guesstimators here and assume your home has 2 bedrooms / 1 bath. That would be about 8 boxes for your whole house and maybe 4 holiday boxes. 12 boxes. That sounds like an easy amount to manage. In reality a home can have as many as 100 storage boxes holding all sorts of crap.
Hopefully you’ve enjoyed all of the tips so far, so I’ll leave you with my bonus tip.
- STORAGE UNITS
If you have one, or need one, don’t get one.
Because you don’t need it. You only see it as a means to getting junk out of sight, out of mind, quickly. If you have one, that is a sign your junk is spilling out of your home. Storage units are designed to essentially make you pay for rent on space for junk. They do not help you in any way shape or form, and nearly everyone I’ve seen has ended in the same fate: Abandoned.
So don’t bother with these things. Clean out the junk and get rid of it. Don’t store it because it’ll just end up getting junked anyways.
